Auckland Mayoral Postal Voting Papers: Examples and Key Features
Overview
Auckland’s local elections, including the mayoral race, are conducted by postal vote every three years. All eligible voters receive a voting pack by mail, which includes the voting paper(s), a candidate information booklet, and a prepaid return envelope.
What the Voting Paper Looks Like
• The voting paper for the Auckland mayoral election lists all candidates standing for mayor, with a box next to each name.
• Voters are instructed to tick the box beside the candidate they wish to vote for.
• The mayoral section appears alongside other local elections (such as local board and ward councillors) on the same paper, but the mayoral list is the same for all Auckland voters.
• The voting paper is accompanied by clear instructions and information on how to complete and return the vote.
Key Features of the Postal Voting Pack
• Voting Paper: Lists all mayoral candidates with tick boxes.
• Instructions: Step-by-step guide on how to mark your vote and return your paper.
• Return Envelope: Prepaid, addressed envelope for returning your completed paper by post or dropping into a designated vote box.
• Candidate Information Booklet: Details about each candidate to help inform your choice.
Voting Method
• Auckland uses the First Past the Post (FPP) system for the mayoral election: you tick the box next to your preferred candidate, and the candidate with the most votes wins.
• You receive only one vote for the mayoral position.
Timeline
• Voting packs are mailed out between 9 and 22 September 2025.
• Votes must be returned by noon on Saturday, 11 October 2025, either by NZ Post or at a designated drop-off location.
